Ended up writing more than I want, and I’m sure someone more knowledgeable can provide more guidance but I hope this helps.ġ0/5/02 Haymaker Music Festival, Spotsylvania, Va. I’d start there for new stuff and go from there. They’ve been on a tear for the last like 5 years now at least after some rough ones between 2010-2014, but have just done their first actual tour in a long time. Uncivilized area is my favorite album though and those songs get a lot of work in the set list rotation. They also write great songs but frankly, when you are only playing 10 total songs across two sets they definitely take a back seat to the jams in the live setting. I think it is the combo of the peaks of soaring guitar solos and valleys of untzy trance that is what I’ve come to love about seeing them. That’s not a complaint at all since I love the trancey sound, but i think it is the main stylistic difference between the two drummers. For example, I once went a biscuit show and counted how many times Allen drops out into just bass drum and high hat untz, it was a lot. If you are a phish guy I’d compare the feeling of a great biscuits peak to the peak of a Harry Hood jam, obviously sounds super different but the emotions are similar if that makes sense.Īfter Sammy left to be a doctor, nerd, they were joined by Allen aka the robot, who brought with him an aggressive low untz that, along with peaks, I think defines a lot of biscuit jamming now. I think this era, in addition to fleshing out the jamtronica sound of the other 3 members and being one of their peaks from a songwriting output perspective, also saw the development of what I consider to be one of the two main biscuit jam styles. Many people people consider the Hot Air Balloon (a song from Barber’s rock opera of the same name) > Astronaut one of their beat segments of all time. I would check out their show from the second night of the haymaker festival in 2002 as a great example of his playing. Their first guy Sammy (until 2006) was very talented but I would describe him as a more conventional jam band drummer, not unlike Mike Greenfield in Lotus. I think the biscuits broadly fall into two different eras that are defined by their drummers. Week 17 - The Allman Brothers Band Looking for individual Jam Bands?
